The project has three core objectives. First and most important is the construction of a high-quality database to support advanced studies in history, the social sciences and related areas of enquiry. A second goal is to improve our understanding of the workings and context of the census in order to interpret more clearly its information. Third, we develop the skills needed by Canadian researchers to make effective use of such data. Students working on the project have the opportunity to improve basic numeracy as well as their capacities for advanced numerical analysis, database management, specialized software and a critical understanding of quantitative information.
